Recess Time

Think back for a moment to elementary school—maybe a grumpy teacher, arithmetic, prose and poetry. What a grind, but it was worth it when we heard that magic word, “Recess.” A time to run, play, and make as much noise as our little hearts desired.

Then we grew up. Times changed. Nobody gives us a recess anymore. Instead, we get a heavy drizzle of politics, wars, Corona Virus, and woke.

But surprise. Those of us in West Texas and Eastern New Mexico recently were awarded a welcome reprieve from the daily grind. Three very positive organizations pooled their time, talent, and treasure and gave us a true recess in the form of a book fair.

The Lubbock Public Libraries offered the Mahon Library as the venue for dozens of writers and illustrators to offer their wares to the public. It was a breath of fresh air as hundreds of men, women, and children (and one horse) roamed through the library—some buying books, attending panel discussions, listening to bestselling authors, face-painting, or simply enjoying a weekend recess.

The three organizing organizations went above and beyond in assuring us we would have a pleasant, fun-filled weekend—and we did.

We knew we were successful when we were already discussing “Next Year” while we dismantled our booths. It was a perfect recess.

And, stay tuned. "The Russian," part three of the Border War Series will be published in February 2022.
