The Unwelcome Home Invader

It didn’t bother to knock or ring the doorbell but entered by a more nefarious means. Our visitor came in and made itself comfortable at our home serenely located on the Llano Estacado of Texas. It was a Greek letter—Omicron, the 15th letter of the Greek alphabet.
There
weren’t any introductions or formalities, but we certainly understood the
dangers of its big daddy, the Delta Virus. Despite our jabs, masks, social
distancing, etc., on Monday afternoon it was here. Testing was Tuesday morning;
results on Wednesday; a primary care physician Zoom exam on Thursday; and the
Infusion on Saturday.
It
would be unfair if I did not give credit to the military and medical personnel
who were involved in these processes. They were true heroes. I was stunned by their
professionalism, kindness, and overall attitude of service above self.
As
the trite old saying goes, “All’s well that ends well.” As so it was—an
inconvenient setback, but 10 days later it was back to the golf course where I
scored a “birdie” on the par 5 Number One Hole.
Nevertheless,
even when it felt like *@$#*#+ or something else, I focused on a positive
project, “The Russian.” Working with layout and graphic design from the
publisher, this third book in the Border War Series is almost to fruition. Our
goal is to be published before the end of February. The pre-publication reviews
are outstanding, especially one from a deep international undercover operator:
Thomas Nichols’ “The Russian,” provides a
masterful and terrifying view into a smuggling operation of weapons, drugs, and
human beings. To read “The Russian” is to fully understand how these criminal
organizations work and how life is along the border.
You
are forewarned. “The Russian” takes the reader deep inside the violent and
corrupt war that is waged north and south of our border.
It is not a book for the faint-hearted. However, it is as true as a novel can
be, tying together the cold hard facts of life with a mosaic of creative
writing that gives an indelible image of life in this seemingly unending war
for the hearts and souls of everyone.
